My Children Have Each Other's Back
Last summer a generous friend offered Byron a trip to San Diego to swim with the dolphins at Sea World.
The gift was for two, and not surprisingly he asked his sister, Audrey, to join him.
So off they went to California where they walked the beaches and sat for long stretches bundled in beach blankets on lounge chairs.
They talked about breakfast and dinner options as well as what might be next for their early life plans.
When the time in San Diego ended, each traveled to a different part of the country knowing they wouldn’t meet again until winter.
They are friends, and that gives me comfort.
For as long as I can remember they have shown respect and even awe for each other.
And I hope that they continue to feel accepted and safe in this sibling relationship, no matter what.
While it's clear they have each other's back, I'm sure that's only a small part of what being lifelong friends and witnesses to each other's highs and lows brings them.
And as I age and they come of age, believing that about them gives me the most reassuring feeling I can imagine.
